Fall fishing brings plenty of variety

Emerald Coast Conditions Overview

October brings a welcome transition to fishing along the Emerald Coast as summer gives way to fall. From 30A and Santa Rosa Beach to Destin and Panama City Beach, cooler mornings and changing seasonal patterns create plenty of opportunities both inshore and offshore. Redfish, speckled trout, mangrove snapper, red grouper, triggerfish and other Gulf favorites remain in the mix, while several seasonal fisheries give offshore anglers even more options this month.

Inshore Fishing Report

Inshore fishing remains a great option in October, with redfish and spotted trout providing steady opportunities around grass flats, docks and shoreline structure. Mangrove snapper continue to hold around bridges and structure, while Spanish mackerel can add some fast-moving action as fall settles in.

Offshore Fishing Report

October offers a strong mix of offshore opportunities. Greater amberjack remain available early in the month, while gray triggerfish, vermilion snapper and red grouper continue to provide quality reef and bottom fishing. Red snapper also has several open stretches throughout October for state-water trips, adding another popular Gulf species to the mix. Mahi mahi can still make an appearance when conditions line up, giving anglers even more variety as fall settles in.

Offshore Species Active Now:

October has a few more moving pieces than most months, so knowing what's open—and when—can help when planning your trip. For Bluewater Charter trips in Florida Gulf state waters, the key October season windows are:

  • Greater Amberjack: Open through October 13

  • Red Snapper: Open October 1–4, October 9–22, October 23–25, and October 30–November 1

  • Gray Triggerfish: Open throughout October

  • Red Grouper: Open throughout October

  • Vermilion Snapper: Open throughout October

  • Gag Grouper: Closed for October

Fishing seasons and regulations can change, and Captain Steve always works within current Florida regulations when determining what we can target and harvest on each trip.

Why October Is a Great Time to Catch

October offers something a little different from the peak summer months. Cooler mornings make time on the water more comfortable, while the transition into fall keeps both inshore and offshore fishing interesting. With amberjack available early in the month, multiple red snapper opportunities and dependable reef species throughout October, there are plenty of ways to put together a great day on the Gulf.

Fresh Catch Recipe Idea

With triggerfish providing another great offshore option this month, October is a perfect time to try our Fried Triggerfish recipe. Triggerfish has a mild, slightly sweet flavor and firm texture that works beautifully with a simple blackened preparation and bright citrus finish.

Captain Steve's Tip

“Fall is a great time to stay flexible. Cooler mornings and changing conditions can shift where the best bite develops, so don't get too locked into chasing one particular species. Let what's happening on the water help determine the plan for the day.”

Planning Your Trip

October gives anglers plenty of choices along the Emerald Coast. Inshore trips continue to offer opportunities for redfish, trout and mangrove snapper, while offshore trips provide a changing mix of amberjack, red snapper, triggerfish, red grouper and other fall favorites as their seasons allow.

Check in on what's biting now as your trip gets closer, then choose between inshore trips, offshore trips, or a laid-back family trip based on the experience you want to have on the water.
