September brings some big names back offshore.
September brings an exciting transition to fishing along the Emerald Coast. Captain Steve reports the familiar mix of fish continues to provide action, but September 1 adds several highly sought-after offshore species back into the conversation. From 30A and Santa Rosa Beach to Destin and Panama City Beach, early fall offers anglers a great combination of summer holdovers and newly opened seasonal opportunities.
Inshore Fishing Report
Inshore fishing remains dependable as we head into September. Redfish and speckled trout continue to provide steady action around grass flats, docks, and shoreline structure, while mangrove snapper remain active around bridges and other structure. Spanish mackerel and flounder can add even more variety, making inshore fishing an approachable option for families and anglers of all experience levels.

Offshore Fishing Report
September is bringing some exciting additions offshore. Greater amberjack season opens September 1 and runs through October 13, while gag grouper opens September 1 through September 30. Red snapper also returns September 1, adding another favorite back into the fall fishing mix. Alongside those seasonal opportunities, vermilion snapper, red grouper, triggerfish, mahi mahi, and other familiar Gulf species continue to give anglers plenty of variety.
Offshore Species Active Now:
Why September Is a Great Time to Catch
September is one of those months when the fishing menu gets noticeably bigger. The usual inshore and offshore species haven't gone anywhere, but the return of greater amberjack, gag grouper, and red snapper creates even more possibilities for a day on the Gulf. Add the transition toward early fall, and there's plenty to look forward to on the water this month.
Fresh Catch Recipe Idea
With greater amberjack back in season, September is a perfect time to try our Amberjack Fish Tacos recipe. Amberjack’s firm, meaty texture holds up beautifully in tacos, making it an easy and flavorful way to enjoy a fresh Gulf catch after a day offshore.
Captain Steve's Tip
“September gives us more options, but that doesn't mean every trip needs to chase every species. Let the conditions and the bite determine the plan. Sometimes focusing on what's working best that day produces a much better experience than trying to check every fish off the list.”
Planning Your Trip
September offers one of the most varied fishing lineups we've seen in a while. Inshore trips continue to provide dependable opportunities for redfish, trout, and mangrove snapper, while offshore trips gain greater amberjack, gag grouper, and red snapper alongside the familiar Gulf favorites already in the mix.
If you're following what's biting now, this is a great month to explore inshore trips, head farther out on offshore trips, or keep things comfortable and easy with one of our family trips along the Emerald Coast.
